In the ever-evolving world of media, Comcast has decided to spin off its NBCUniversal cable channels, including MSNBC and CNBC. This move comes as a response to the rise of streaming services, which have significantly reduced the popularity of traditional cable TV. The company aims to create a new, well-funded venture, making it possible to snap up other networks if consolidation happens in the industry.
Comcast's president, Michael Cavanagh, hinted at the opportunity to "play offense" during a recent investor call. The new company will consist of cable news outlets and other networks like USA, E! , Syfy, and the Golf Channel. Despite being profitable, these networks have seen a decline in subscriptions and viewership due to the shift towards streaming.
The spinoff is a strategic shift for Comcast, which will retain key assets like the NBC broadcast network, film and TV studios, theme parks, and its Peacock streaming service. The company also keeps its Xfinity broadband service. This change is not unprecedented; other media giants like Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global have also been adjusting their strategies.
