Community April: A Month of Support and Action

The Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) is launching a full‑month program to mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. Their plan mixes learning, outreach and chances for the public to back survivors. Instead of waiting for a single event, SPARCC has lined up weekly activities that spark discussion and build knowledge. From book displays to family fun days, each event aims to make the neighborhood safer and better informed. “People coming together during this month helps survivors feel seen and encourages prevention, ” explains the director of Sexual Violence at SPARCC. “Every conversation, share or attendance leaves a lasting mark. ” Community members can join in many ways. A library will host a month‑long book display on sexual violence, while local centers ask residents to wear blue or teal on specific dates to show support.On April 8, a walk organized with the Lauren’s Kids Foundation invites participants to stand against child sexual abuse. Two days later, a festival in Venice offers a chance to meet SPARCC volunteers and learn about local help. The organization also hosts a 24‑hour online giving challenge, a child safety day with interactive games at a sports complex, and a luncheon that honors the volunteers who keep SPARCC running. Other highlights include a 5K walk for crime‑victim rights, a denim‑wearing day that challenges myths about sexual violence, and an ice cream fundraiser where a portion of sales funds free programs for survivors. SPARCC’s core goal is to give a safe place, raise awareness and push for social change so domestic and sexual violence can end.
