A sneaky app called WalletConnect appeared in the Google Play Store. It looked like a real crypto wallet, but it was actually a scam. The app had over 10,000 downloads before people started noticing something fishy. Around 150 users lost their cryptocurrency because they trusted this fake app too much.
Once installed, the app asked users to link their crypto wallets. Users thought they were getting access to safe web3 apps. But really, they were being tricked into visiting a bad website that stole their wallet information. The thieves used something called smart contracts to take cryptocurrency from victims' wallets and put it into their own pockets.
Only 20 people left negative reviews on the Play Store. That meant the scammers could post lots of good reviews, making the app look trustworthy. Google finally removed the app five months after it was launched, but not before $70,000 in cryptocurrency was taken from users.
