DC Council Member Challenges New Emergency Room Proposal

Christina Henderson, a DC Council member, is skeptical about a new 12,000-square-foot emergency department being proposed for Ivy City. The project, called District Hospital Partners LP, aims to build a standalone facility on Bladensburg Road near New York Avenue. Henderson thinks the city already has enough capacity without another full-scale emergency room.

Henderson believes the real solution isn't more emergency rooms but better preventive care. She points out that the District lacks pediatric urgent care options and urges residents to use those instead. She also worries about how this new facility might affect Medicaid spending and whether it truly serves the community's needs.

The proposed building would cost $29.3 million and include 14 treatment rooms plus diagnostic imaging and a clinical lab. Henderson notes that District Hospital Partners didn't ask for public money, so the D.C. Department of Health will review the need through a certificate of need process. She remains focused on health literacy and making sure people know when to seek help.
