Detroit Welcomes Waymo's Snow-Savvy Self-Driving Cars

Waymo, the self-driving tech company, is bringing its cars to Detroit. This makes Detroit the first city in the Midwest to have Waymo's self-driving cars. Waymo has been working in Michigan since 2016, but this is the first time they will offer rides to the public. Waymo's cars are designed to handle snowy weather. They have special sensors that can see in all conditions. These sensors can even clean themselves to keep snow and ice from blocking their view. Waymo has been testing these cars in snowy places like Upstate New York and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Waymo's cars use a mix of cameras, radar, and lidar to see around them. They have 13 cameras, four lidar, and six radar sensors. These sensors work together to give the car a 360-degree view of up to 500 meters. Waymo's cars also have heaters and wipers to keep the sensors clean. Waymo has been operating in warmer cities like San Francisco and Phoenix. But now, they are expanding to cities with more challenging weather. Waymo has driven thousands of miles in snowy conditions to prepare for this expansion. Waymo is working with local officials to bring its service to Detroit. They will need to set up operations centers for charging, maintenance, and cleaning. Waymo is also expanding to San Diego and Las Vegas. But for now, Detroit is the first city in the Midwest to have Waymo's self-driving cars.
