Students from Washington State University recently visited Moldova, diving deep into the country's rich winemaking traditions. They explored ancient sites, like medieval ruins and monasteries, where monks once hid to protect their wine. This trip was more than just a tour; it was a chance to understand how wine is woven into Moldova's culture and daily life.
The students were part of a partnership between their university and the Technical University of Moldova. They got to see the university's labs and facilities, and even shared their own research on grape smoke exposure. For many, this was a chance to learn about winemaking in a different part of the world and compare it to what they know in the U. S.
One student, Cecilia Sevier, was especially inspired by the trip. She saw how winemaking in Moldova isn't just a business; it's a tradition passed down through generations. The winemakers they met were humble and passionate, eager to share their knowledge and hear what the students thought. This experience made Sevier even more excited about working in the wine industry after graduation.
The trip included visits to famous wineries like Cricova and Asconi, where the students learned how the wine industry supports the local community. They also got to taste unique Moldovan wine varieties, like Fetească albă and Viorica, a dry orange wine that pairs well with local food.
The highlight of the trip was the Moldovan Wine Festival. The students experienced the country's enthusiasm for wine through music, crafts, and, of course, wine tasting. This trip opened their eyes to the global side of the wine industry and made them feel more connected to it.
