Disney has recently changed how they approach diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) programs. These changes come after many companies have been reviewing their own DEI efforts. Disney has decided to scale back. They decided to change the name of some categories. "Diversity & Inclusion" is now called "Talent Strategy. "This change focuses more on how values drive business success.
Furthermore, Disney got rid of the "Reimagine Tomorrow initiative. "This initiative had a website that highlighted stories and talent from underrepresented communities. It was replaced by an updated hub on Disney’s corporate website.
Disney has also decided to change how they warn viewers about outdated stereotypes in their content. Previously, Disney+ would show a detailed disclaimer before playing certain shows or movies. Now, the warning will be shorter and only appear in the "Details" tab. The new message will be:"This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions. "
The company has been trending towards more conservative stances recently. They initially stayed quiet about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ 2022 “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. They had a feud over land rights. More recently, a trans storyline was cut from Pixar’s upcoming Win or Lose TV show. This isn't the first time Disney has cut a trans storyline. The same thing happened to Marvel animated show Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
