Do NYC families want AI schools or more support for existing ones?
Lower Manhattan, New York, USAThu Apr 16 2026
New York families are arguing over a plan to open the city’s first AI-focused high school this fall in Lower Manhattan. The school, called Next Generation Technology High, would share a building with another school if approved by officials on April 29. But the proposal has sparked debate—some love the idea, while others worry it could hurt students’ thinking skills, risk privacy, or favor only top achievers.
At a recent hearing, most critics came from Lower Manhattan Community Middle School, which shares the building. They want officials to delay the vote and expand their middle school instead. One parent and school librarian compared the fast rollout to Big Tech’s "move fast" approach, asking, "Why fix what isn’t broken? "
Supporters argue AI is the future. A high school senior who co-founded a coding club said her school lacked tech opportunities. "Students shouldn’t just use technology—they should create it, " she said. Others agree, pointing to AI’s growing role in jobs as proof.
But skeptics aren’t convinced. One graduate of the middle school said, "AI might distract from real learning. " Another parent with tech experience added, "What students learn today could be outdated by the time they enter the workforce. "
Meanwhile, officials defend the plan, saying it meets demand for tech-focused education. The school would partner with Carnegie Mellon University and offer college courses. Still, some question if a selective admissions process aligns with the city’s goal of diverse schools.
Applications are open until Friday, with offers sent in May. While supporters see a chance for innovation, critics ask: Is this the best use of limited space?
