Ear Infections Still Hit Kids' Hearing Hard in Poorer Areas

Kids get ear infections all the time. Those infections can lead to hearing loss that could have been prevented. It's one of the top causes of hearing trouble worldwide.

A recent study looked at data from 1990 to 2023. Researchers checked how common this hearing loss is across different countries and income levels. They used a massive global health database to track changes over time.

The numbers show a small drop overall since 1990. But the problem remains much bigger in low income regions. Children aged five to fourteen are the most affected. Boys tend to have it more than girls. Most cases are mild, but they still add up.

No country saw a significant rise in new cases. Many places are stable or improving, especially middle income nations. However, because the population is growing, the total number of people living with this hearing loss is still going up. Falling rates per person help a bit, but not enough to offset the growth.
