Ebola Strikes and Fear Push Doctors to the Edge

Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mongbwalu,Mon May 25 2026
In the heart of Congo’s Ituri province, where the first signs of a new Ebola wave appeared, health workers are facing more than just a shortage of medicine. They now contend with angry mobs and patients running from the very hospitals meant to save them. Three separate attacks have rocked the area, with one hospital targeted twice in a single weekend. During these incidents, dozens of patients fled the safety tents set up by international aid groups, and in one case a patient died while trying to escape. Local distrust runs deep. Many villagers believe the disease is a hoax or that the outbreak was fabricated to control them. Others want the bodies of those who died, hoping to bury their loved ones themselves—yet these remains can still spread the virus.
World Health Organization officials say this outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain is one of the largest ever, with over nine hundred suspected cases and more than two hundred deaths already recorded. The delay in spotting infections means responders are constantly playing catch‑up. Past outbreaks, like the 2013–2016 West African crisis and the 2018–2020 attacks in eastern Congo, show a pattern: violence against health facilities fuels the spread. In this current wave, attacks are often linked to local groups who see an opportunity for political or financial gain. Outside Congo, neighboring Uganda reports new cases, raising concerns that the virus could cross borders if containment fails. The situation remains tense as communities and health workers struggle to keep the epidemic in check.
