Egypt has finally unveiled its Grand Egyptian Museum, a massive project that has been in the works for 20 years. This museum, located near the famous Giza Pyramids and Sphinx, is the largest in the world dedicated to an ancient civilization. It houses over 50, 000 artifacts, including the complete collection of treasures from King Tutankhamun's tomb, which has never been displayed in its entirety since its discovery in 1922.
The museum's opening was a grand event, attended by world leaders and celebrated with a spectacular light show featuring drones and a "global symphony of humanity. " The museum itself is an architectural marvel, with a towering glass façade that mimics the nearby pyramids. Inside, visitors are greeted by a colossal statue of Ramses the Great, one of ancient Egypt's most powerful pharaohs.
The museum's 12 main galleries showcase artifacts from prehistoric times to the Roman era, organized by time period and theme. Two new halls dedicated to King Tutankhamun's collection will be opened for the first time during the grand opening. This collection includes the boy pharaoh's funeral beds, chariots, golden throne, sarcophagus, and the iconic burial mask.
Egypt hopes that this museum will attract millions of visitors each year, boosting its tourism industry and economy. The government has also revamped the area around the museum and the pyramids, building new highways and an airport nearby. The tourism sector has been struggling in recent years due to political turmoil and the pandemic, but it has started to recover. Officials expect the museum to draw even more tourists and contribute significantly to the country's GDP.
The museum will open to the public on November 4, the anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. This event is not just a celebration of ancient Egyptian culture but also a testament to modern Egypt's efforts to preserve and showcase its rich history.
