In Malaysia, the number of children diagnosed with autism has grown significantly. In 2010, there were 99 cases, but by 2021, that number had jumped to 589. This rise highlights a critical need for more specialized education options beyond traditional schools.
In 2011, the RYTHM Foundation stepped in to fill this gap. They opened Taarana School in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, to support children with learning differences. The school's name, which means \"awakening\" in Sanskrit, reflects its mission to help students with developmental and sensory challenges reach their full potential.
Taarana School serves about 50 children aged 3 to 16, offering tailored educational programs and therapy services. The school also provides financial aid to families who need it, making education more accessible.
The school's approach is unique. It focuses on individual learning plans, allowing students to progress at their own pace. The curriculum is divided into different programs based on age and developmental goals. For younger children, the Early Intervention Program uses intensive methods to support early development. The Intermediate Program helps students build academic and functional skills for greater independence. Older students can join the Pre-vocational Program to learn practical life skills and prepare for future employment.
Beyond academics, Taarana offers therapy services like speech and language development, occupational therapy, and behavioral intervention. These services work hand-in-hand with the school's educational programs.
Taarana's success didn't go unnoticed. In July 2024, it won the \"Best Special Education Centre of the Year\" award from the Private Educational Entrepreneur Association of Malaysia. The award recognized the school's excellent academic instruction, therapeutic support, and family engagement. Judges praised Taarana's ability to create measurable improvements in students' academic, social, and adaptive skills.
In August 2024, Taarana launched the Zero Waste @ Taarana initiative. This program teaches students practical skills through recycling and creative projects using waste materials. It also connects environmental education to employment preparation, addressing the challenge of finding meaningful work for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Taarana's impact extends beyond its students. The school's annual Walk for Autism raises public awareness and connects families with support networks. The 2025 event drew over 120 participants to the PKNS Sports Complex in Petaling Jaya.
As Malaysia continues to face rising autism diagnoses and limited special education infrastructure, Taarana School shows how corporate social responsibility initiatives can help fill these gaps. When students at Taarana turn recycled materials into fashion or learn to sort waste for future green jobs, they're not just acquiring skills. They're challenging assumptions about what neurodivergent individuals can contribute to society.
