European Nursing Ethics: A Patchwork of Principles

Nursing ethics is a guiding force in the profession, but its application varies across European Union member-states. Each country's unique socio-legal context shapes its approach to ethics, resulting in a diverse set of priorities.

A recent study compared 22 European Union nursing codes of ethics, along with the European Nursing Council and International Council of Nurses codes. The analysis involved experts from nursing, qualitative research, and health law. The findings revealed 14 key themes: dignity, autonomy, professional secrecy, safety, and more.

Interestingly, fundamental principles like dignity and respect showed strong convergence across the board. However, newer areas like artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability were formalized unevenly. This suggests that while there's a shared ethical core, each country's approach to emerging challenges is distinct.

The study provides an updated snapshot of European nursing ethics and may inform future discussions on adapting to contemporary healthcare challenges. It highlights the importance of respecting national contexts and priorities in shaping ethical guidance.
