Expanding March Madness: What a 76‑Team Bracket Means
New York, USA, City,Wed Apr 29 2026
The NCAA is set to grow its basketball tournaments from 68 to 76 teams next year, a move that will reshape the classic bracket and add new games before the main action starts. The change has been on the table for four years, with conference leaders and coaches pushing for more spots while critics worry it will dilute the importance of regular‑season play. After several committees sign off, a formal announcement is expected in May.
The new format will keep 52 teams in the main bracket that begins on Thursday and Friday, while 24 teams will compete in a first‑round “opening round” held on Tuesday and Wednesday. This round will replace the current First Four, expanding from four games to 24 across two sites, one of which will remain in Dayton. The opening round will feature a mix of automatic‑bid teams and at‑large selections, with lower seeds (No. 16s and half of the No. 15s) starting there.
Television coverage will adjust to accommodate the extra games, with three windows on each day: a late‑afternoon slot around 4 p. m. ET, a mid‑evening one near 7 p. m. , and a late‑night pair between 9 and 10 p. m. ET. Networks will likely spread the action across multiple channels to keep fans engaged.
Financially, the NCAA is looking for new revenue streams to cover higher travel and operational costs. The organization has loosened restrictions on alcohol sponsorships, hoping beer brands will become major partners. Gambling ads remain banned due to existing rules. These changes come amid mounting legal expenses and a need for fresh income, as the men's tournament is the NCAA’s primary money source.
The expansion marks the first change in field size since 2011, when the tournament grew from 65 to 68 teams. Earlier adjustments in 2001 and 2011 showed that the NCAA prefers adding spots over cutting bids. The move to 76 teams will make the bracket more complex, but it also offers smaller programs a chance to compete on the national stage and could bring in more fans and dollars.
