Falling Short: The Quest for Reliable Balance Measures in DMD

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive condition that affects muscle strength, balance, and mobility. People with DMD often struggle with balance impairments, which can lead to falls and reduced independence. To track disease progression and measure the effectiveness of treatments, it's crucial to assess balance accurately. However, the reliability and validity of existing balance assessment tools in DMD patients are unclear.

A comprehensive search of medical databases yielded 4908 records, and six studies were selected for analysis. These studies examined the clinical utility and measurement properties of various balance assessment tools in DMD patients. The results showed that some tools, such as the Timed Up and Go Test and the Functional Reach Test, demonstrated good reliability and validity.

While current balance assessment tools show promise, further research is needed to establish their long-term performance and responsiveness. This will help ensure that these tools are reliable and effective in clinical practice and research. By improving balance assessment in DMD patients, healthcare providers can better track disease progression and develop more effective treatment plans.
