Fast Color-Change Test Detects Bacteria in Under Half an Hour
Doctors often need to know fast if a patient has a bacterial infection, especially in emergencies. Current tests can take too long or need fancy labs. Researchers built a simple test that can give a quick answer right at the bedside.
The test uses CRISPR technology paired with a protein named dCas9 to find the exact DNA piece from the bacteria. When that piece is found, it helps tiny gold particles covered with a special molecule stick together. This sticking makes the solution shift from red to purple and creates spots that boost a Raman signal. So you can see the color change with your eye or get a more precise reading with a small Raman device.
Because the method zeros in on the target DNA, it is very specific and can spot as few as ten bacterial cells in a milliliter of liquid. The whole process, including a quick prep step, finishes in less than thirty minutes. Scientists tried it with real urine samples and detected three common germs without getting confused by other microbes.
The idea is to turn this into a portable kit that anyone could use in a clinic, a pharmacy, or even out in the field. It gives both a quick visual cue and a numbers-based readout, letting users pick whichever works best for the situation.
