Doctors fight germs every day, but lab tests can take days to grow bacteria or run costly DNA scans. A technology called FTIR offers a quicker way by scanning microbial molecules with infrared light, creating unique chemical fingerprints. Researchers reviewed 50 studies from the last decade to see how well this method works for spotting infections early. They found it excels at telling apart different strains of bacteria and fungi when used with math-based tools like PCA and LDA. These methods help computers recognize patterns in the scans, almost like teaching software to identify faces.
Most research focused on bacteria (42 percent), followed by fungi (32 percent), while viruses and parasites got less attention. Surprisingly, over half the studies aimed to name microbes precisely, while few tried to predict diseases directly. A smaller group used FTIR just to separate strains without building full diagnostic models. The tool’s speed could speed up outbreaks control, but hurdles remain: hospitals need bigger libraries of microbial signatures and clearer rules for using this method. One big question lingers: Can FTIR replace slow culture tests entirely, or will it stay a helpful sidekick?
