Feeling Stuck: How Americans View Their Economy Today
USASun May 17 2026
The last month, a survey of more than two thousand U. S. adults revealed that worry about money has reached new highs, and many feel less confident than they did a year ago. A majority say their pay isn’t keeping pace with rising prices, and most describe the economy as “uncertain. ”
Gas prices are a big part of that unease. People say the cost of fuel is squeezing their budgets, while uncertainty about the situation in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz leaves them unsure of what’s happening day‑to‑day. The conflict has not been seen as a benefit to U. S. interests, and opinions on whether it helps the country’s strategy are split.
The president’s economic policies are also under fire. About two‑thirds of respondents think his actions have made the economy worse in the short term, though a smaller group hopes for improvement over time. Feelings of frustration or anger dominate the conversation about his handling of inflation, and even many Republicans rate him poorly on that issue. His overall approval has slipped to its lowest point in his second term.
The other major party is not seen as a better solution either. Most voters believe neither Democrats nor Republicans have done enough to ease the cost of living, and a sizable share say they’re unsure which side is more effective. When it comes to specific policy areas, Democrats edge out in perceived support for the economy, but Republicans still score higher on issues like immigration.
Looking ahead, many people expect a slowdown or even a recession. The fear that artificial intelligence could replace jobs adds to the anxiety, especially for those under fifty who feel their chances are slimmer than those of previous generations. Overall, the mood is pessimistic, with “uncertain” topping the list of descriptors and a growing sense that things are unfair.
The data comes from a nationally representative survey conducted in mid‑May 2026, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2. 7 points.
