Iodine is super important for pregnant women. But measuring it in urine can be tricky. The amount of iodine in urine changes a lot. This makes it hard to get accurate results. So, scientists looked for a better way.
They found that using the iodine-to-creatinine ratio in urine gives a more stable measure. This ratio doesn't change much during the day. The study involved 13 pregnant women. They collected urine samples for seven days. Then, they tested the samples for iodine and creatinine.
The results showed that the iodine-to-creatinine ratio was more reliable than just measuring iodine alone. It had less variation. This means it gives a better picture of iodine levels. To get precise results, the study suggests collecting 33 urine samples for an individual. For a group of people, 39 samples are needed.
The best time to collect urine samples is between 12:00 and 18:00. This time frame gives the most accurate results. The study also found that urine collected between 18:00 and 23:59 had the strongest link to daily iodine levels.
This research helps doctors and scientists understand how to measure iodine better. It's a step towards ensuring pregnant women get the right amount of iodine. This is crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby.
