Ever feel lost in college, unsure of what to study or do with your life? You're not alone. Two former BYU presidents, Dallin H. Oaks and Jeffrey R. Holland, shared their own struggles and advice on this topic.
President Oaks admitted he spent most of his time at BYU figuring out his career path. He initially thought he'd become a doctor, following in his father's footsteps. But after taking a zoology class, he realized medicine wasn't for him. He then tried accounting before finally considering law school in his senior year.
President Holland had a similar experience. When asked if he ever dreamed of becoming BYU's president, he laughed and said no. He never planned his career path. Instead, he believed that education is about more than just choosing a major or following a specific career path. He thinks the Lord guides us, exposing us to different things to help us find our purpose.
Current BYU president, Reese, echoed these sentiments. He encouraged students to focus on BYU's mission and to develop gratitude and a desire to serve Jesus Christ. He believes that by doing so, students can allow the Lord to direct their educational and career paths.
So, what's the takeaway? It's okay to be unsure about your future. It's okay to change your mind. And it's okay to not have it all figured out. Just keep learning, keep praying, and keep an open mind. The path will reveal itself.
