Did you know that some people who look slim and work out regularly might still be at risk for health issues? This is because of something called normal-weight obesity. In a recent study, researchers looked at 204 people who exercised regularly. They found that even though these people had a healthy body mass index (BMI), some of them had a high percentage of body fat and extra fat around their bellies. This is what doctors call normal-weight obesity and abdominal obesity.
The study found that about 13% of women who had a healthy BMI actually had normal-weight obesity. None of the men in the study had this issue. About 26% of all the people in the study had extra fat around their bellies, which is more common in men.
So, even if you look fit and exercise regularly, it's important to remember that your BMI isn't the only thing that matters. Pay attention to your body fat percentage and belly fat too. It's all about being healthy, not just looking thin.
