Fitbit's latest app update, now in public preview, brings a mix of improvements and letdowns. The AI coach, in particular, had a rocky start. On day one, it had trouble recognizing the Pixel Watch 4, confusing it with the older Pixel Watch 2. However, some fixes rolled in over the week, like better text editing and improved strength workout interfaces.
The app's exercise library is a mixed bag. It's huge, with some unusual and oddly worded exercises, but it's also missing some common ones. The AI seems to have a knack for remembering things, sometimes too much. For instance, it kept pushing for a 5K improvement plan even after being told to focus on strength training.
Running workouts were a hassle. The app didn't make it easy to follow them on the watch, and the AI struggled with basic math, messing up workout times. The AI also had trouble understanding and adjusting goals. It didn't offer much advice on setting realistic goals or planning long-term. It's clear that the AI has a way to go before it can match the expertise of a human coach.
