Fun Science Lab Just Opened in Flint for Kids
Flint, MI, USAFri May 15 2026
A new hands-on science exhibit just opened at the Flint Children’s Museum, turning playtime into learning time. Called Forces at Play, it cost $30, 000 to build, paid for by three local groups. The goal isn’t just to entertain kids but to get them curious about how forces like magnetism and air pressure actually work. Three different stations let children build, experiment, and balance objects while figuring out science rules on their own.
The first station, called Force Field, lets kids use magnets to create shapes and learn about attraction and repulsion. In Flow Factory, children connect tubes and watch balls fly through the air with a push from powerful fans. The last area, In Weigh Cool, shows how weight and distance change the balance of a giant seesaw. Each play zone turns science into something kids can touch, move, and test in real time.
Donations funded the whole project. General Motors gave $20, 000, while two smaller groups pitched in $5, 000 each. These supporters say hands-on science early helps kids grow into problem solvers. Still, some wonder if museums need to do more to reach kids who can’t visit in person, especially when travel and time are limited.
The museum has been around since the 1990s but only now got this big STEM boost. Located downtown, it sits in a quiet neighborhood near the university. The space tries to make science feel less like a classroom and more like playtime. Yet with rising costs and fewer families able to donate, relying on big sponsors raises questions about who really gets to enjoy these exhibits.
