A new face is now leading the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump and others. Pete Skandalakis, head of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, has taken over after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified. Willis was removed due to a romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had appointed, creating an "appearance of impropriety. "
Skandalakis stepped in after several other prosecutors declined the case. He emphasized the public's interest in the case and the need for a transparent decision. Willis' office handed over a massive amount of evidence, including 101 boxes of documents and an eight-terabyte hard drive. Skandalakis is now reviewing the case to decide the next steps.
The case involves 14 other defendants, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows. Trump's legal team believes the case will be dismissed, while Giuliani's attorney expressed confidence in Skandalakis' fairness. Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that the case against Trump is unlikely to proceed while he is president.
This isn't Skandalakis' first involvement in the case. He was previously involved in a conflict of interest issue regarding Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones. Willis was barred from seeking criminal charges against Jones due to her involvement in a fundraiser for his Democratic opponent.
The case originally alleged a conspiracy to overturn Trump's narrow loss to Joe Biden in Georgia. Defense attorneys argued that Willis' relationship with the special prosecutor created a conflict of interest. Despite Willis' claims that the relationship began after the prosecutor was hired, the court found an "appearance of impropriety" and removed her from the case.
Skandalakis' appointment is temporary, and he has stated he will not receive extra pay for the case. He will be reimbursed for expenses. The outcome of the case remains uncertain, but Skandalakis' decision will shape its future.
