Germany Boosts Defence Buying Speed

Germany, BerlinThu May 21 2026
The German defence ministry is changing its buying system to act faster and work better with tech labs. It plans to set up small project teams that will team up closely with universities and research groups. These groups will focus on new gadgets, faster decision‑making and closer ties with other European countries. Germany has recently raised how much money it can borrow and earmarked many billions of euros to rebuild its army. The urgency comes after the United States‑Germany alliance felt strain during President Trump’s term. Minister Boris Pistorius says the main job is to spend these funds quickly and smartly over the next few years.
The army’s strength had slipped after the Cold War, and critics worry that huge budgets could be wasted if buying processes stay unchanged. Ukraine’s clever use of drones shows how fast military tech can change, and watchdogs warn that industry pressure might lead to bad spending choices. The ministry will also improve how it watches the market, manages suppliers and controls prices. It plans to enlarge the Innovation Centre in Erding and create a new one for naval electronics in Kiel. Other hubs will pop up: a space and navy tech centre in Bremen, an IT hub in Dresden that already hosts many tech firms, and a Brussels office to coordinate with NATO. Reform will roll out slowly over the coming months so that ongoing projects stay on track.
