The New York Giants have decided to part ways with head coach Brian Daboll after a rough start to the 2025 season. With a record of 2-8, the team's performance left much to be desired. Daboll's time with the Giants spanned over three seasons, but his overall record was not impressive, standing at 20-40-1. Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator, will step in as the interim head coach.
Daboll's journey with the Giants began with high hopes. He was known for his offensive strategies and even won the AP NFL Coach of the Year award in 2022. However, things took a turn for the worse in the following seasons. The team's offense struggled, ranking 30th and 31st in scoring in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Despite these challenges, the Giants gave Daboll another chance this offseason, hoping for a turnaround.
One of Daboll's key moves was to replace quarterback Daniel Jones with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. The plan was to use Wilson as a bridge to develop rookie Jaxson Dart. Initially, Dart showed promise with a win against the Chargers in Week 4. However, the team's performance was inconsistent, leading to a 2-8 record.
Dart's aggressive playing style endeared him to fans but also led to multiple injuries, including concussions. Despite these concerns, Daboll did not change his approach. This decision drew criticism, especially after Daboll was fined for entering the medical tent during a concussion check.
The Giants' ownership ultimately decided that enough was enough. Daboll's tenure ended, and the team will now look for a new full-time head coach. This marks the fifth search for a head coach since Tom Coughlin left in 2015. The Giants' record since then has been less than stellar, with a combined record of 53-104-1.
