Pharrell Williams' musical biopic, Golden, won't be hitting the big screen anytime soon. This isn't the first film about Pharrell Williams in recent times.
There is another film that deals with the singer's childhood, Pieces by Pieces, which was released in October. To dismay of many fans the film Golden was scheduled to release on May 5 but it was never completed. A heavyweight cast included Kelvin Harrison Jr. , Halle Bailey, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Quinta Brunson, and Janelle Monáe, among others, the star-studded film had all the makings of a box office hit.
The film was set in Virginia Beach, Virginia, during the summer of 1977. It was not just about storytelling; it was about the music. Think of those classic musicals where the tunes drive the story. Williams talked about the film and described it as a celebration of Black joy. It was a story of self-discovery and chasing dreams, but with lots of magic. It was a celebration of Black culture and life.
It was about a boy growing up in Virginia Beach, when the top hits of the time were almost characters in the story. It wasa whole new approach that was very different from other musicals. It was special.
Critics began to wonder if movie goers would be interested in two films about Pharrell Williams, also known as the singer for the Despicable Me movie, in less than a year. The production studio decided to scrap the film all together.
There is no doubt that fans wanted to see Da'Vine Joy Randolph and the rest of the cast in action. But it might not be the end of Golden. It might surface again in a different form. It would be too bad if the film was never released. The cost most likely was in the millions of dollars. The cast and crew did a ton of work.
Universal was the studio that produced the film. It was a shame because the movie could have been good. Maybe it will come back in a different way.
Eventually, the producers, including Williams and director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind), decided that the film just wasn't working out. “This project just wasn’t what we envisioned in the editing room”, they said in a statement to Variety.
The movie was set to release in May 2025, but it never even made it past the early stages of post-production. The musical biopic about Pharrell Williams’s childhood is no longer moving forward.
There was a lot of disappointment but it looks like the collaboration with Universal will continue, and there are rumors that they might do something else together. So the last laugh will belong to the fans and the rest of the producers.
