Golfers Face the Clock in Windy Conditions
Aronimink Golf Club, USAMon May 18 2026
Players at a recent major golf event found themselves racing against more than just the leaderboard when strong winds and tricky pin placements turned round two into a battle against time. Alex Smalley, who sat at the top after day one, wasn’t shaken by a rules official’s warning. He pointed out that delays are part of the game, especially when Mother Nature steps in. "Being put on the clock isn’t new to me, " he noted, brushing off the extra pressure.
His group—including Zach Haynes and Chandler Blanchet—got delayed early but pushed through. Smalley finished with a solid 69, though the foursome had to wait out slow play caused by the course conditions. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, and Keegan Bradley got the same warning further down the line. Thomas argued that the "time par" system doesn’t account for tough conditions like blustery winds or hidden hole locations. "How can one standard apply when the course changes every day? " he questioned.
Despite the slow pace, Thomas stayed sharp, carding key birdies to keep his round alive. The debate over pace of play isn’t new in golf, but these conditions made it impossible to ignore. Players aren’t just fighting each other—they’re also fighting the weather and the clock.
