Starting soon, Americans won't have to worry about medical bills hurting their credit scores. The Biden administration is updating the rules so that medical debt can't be included in credit reports. This change will help about 15 million people by removing around $49 billion in medical bills from their credit records.
Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, explained that these changes will stop debt collectors from misusing the credit reporting system to force people to pay medical bills they might not even owe. The new rule will come into effect 60 days after it's published in the Federal Register.
A big benefit of this change is that it might boost credit scores by an average of 20 points for those with medical debt. Plus, it could help approve about 22, 000 more mortgages each year. Medical debts on credit reports aren't a good way to predict if someone can pay other loans. And health care bills often have mistakes that can cause long battles between patients, insurers, and providers.
High healthcare costs are a big problem for many Americans. Some estimates say a large part of the population has medical debt. Recently, medical bills have become the most common collection item on credit reports.
The Biden administration has been working on making life easier for people dealing with higher living costs. They want to protect consumers and help them get loans. In the past, the three largest credit reporting agencies agreed to remove nearly 70% of medical debt from consumer credit reports.
Now, Harris announced that states have wiped out over $1 billion in medical debt for more than 750, 000 Americans using funds from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. They plan to eliminate another $7 billion in debt for nearly 3 million people by the end of next year. North Carolina also set up a program where 99 hospitals promised to get rid of up to $4 billion in unpaid bills for almost 2 million low- and middle-income residents.
