Google Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America for U. S. Users

Google Maps has updated its app so that anyone using it inside the United States will now see the body of water called Lake America instead of Lake Ontario. The change was made after the president gave a directive to rename the lake.

The directive came while the United States and Canada were locked in a trade dispute that added huge tariffs to each other's products. It mirrors a similar move in 2025 when the same president ordered the Gulf of Mexico to become the Gulf of America. Google says the new name follows the official United States Geographic Names Information System list.

People in Canada still see the original name, and users outside the two countries can view both versions. Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford, put up a huge sign on the shoreline that read Lake Ontario. Now and forever. The White House, the Canadian prime minister’s office, and Ford’s team did not reply right away.

The update rolls out gradually, so not everyone sees it at the same time. The move shows how map services can reflect political decisions, even if the change feels odd to many. Critics wonder if the rename will stick or cause confusion.
