Governor Hochul Explains Why She Won't Go to Niagara County Right Now

New York Governor Kathy Hochul spoke up on Thursday about why she is staying away from Niagara County for now. She made it clear that she does not want to be seen as using people's problems for political gain. "I have seen other politicians travel to places like this and turn local struggles into campaign material," she explained. "That is not who I am. I trust the experts working on the ground more than big political speeches."

The Governor also talked about a controversial tax break deal. Critics have questioned why a company called Pennrose received special treatment from Empire State Development. Hochul defended the arrangement, saying it was the only way to get a massive $225 million housing development off the ground. She believes the project will help the region in the long run, even if some people are unhappy with how it was structured financially.

On another note, Hochul announced that New York State is putting $124 million toward building the new Northern Chautauqua Hospital. This cash infusion covers more than half of the project's total price tag of $223 million. The remaining funds will come from other sources. Local officials in the area have been pushing for this healthcare facility for some time, and the state funding represents a major step forward for the community's medical services.
