Harnessing Power from Unconventional Sources
The tech industry's insatiable hunger for power has sparked a new wave of innovation. Companies are turning to unusual methods to generate and use energy. One such approach involves using rat brains to improve artificial intelligence. San Francisco-based Biological Computing Company is pioneering this field by growing brain cells from rat brains or stem cells and stimulating them with electrical impulses. This data is then used to build mathematical models that enhance existing AI models. The company claims its first adapter demonstrated efficiency gains of up to 500% while increasing video output quality.

In a different corner of the country, Panthalassa is harnessing the power of ocean waves to create floating data centers. These contraptions, called nodes, float at sea level and harness the energy of waves to generate near-continuous power. With no wires or cables connecting them to land, these nodes can process computing tasks on the spot and send answers back via satellite.

Meanwhile, the American nuclear industry is experiencing a resurgence, thanks in part to the Trump Administration's efforts to cut red tape and build out the country's nuclear infrastructure. Private sector companies like Valar Atomics are responding with rapid progress. Founded just three years ago, Valar has already constructed its first reactor in a mere nine months. The company's focus is on scaling nuclear power as quickly and safely as possible, with the goal of providing power to individual data centers, factories, and other energy-hungry facilities.
