Debi Bejot, the new city administrator of Harvard, has a history of serving the city in various roles. From policing to finance, she has seen it all. This broad experience gives her a unique view of the city's needs and challenges.
Bejot first came to Harvard in 1995 as a police officer. Later, she served on the City Council as a 2nd Ward alderwoman. In 2010, she switched gears and became the city bookkeeper. Her journey didn't stop there. She was later promoted to finance director, taking over responsibilities from the retiring Dave Nelson.
Since April, Bejot has been the interim city administrator. She stepped into this role after Lou Leone's contract was not renewed. Leone has since sued the city, claiming unpaid benefits and severance.
Bejot is now in charge of several important projects. One key initiative is the road construction and maintenance plan. Harvard plans to sell $3. 8 million in bonds to fund this. The plan is to use the 1% sales tax approved by voters in Spring 2023 to pay off these bonds.
The road construction plan will focus on major projects in the first year, followed by maintenance for the next four years. If successful, Harvard may issue another 15-year bond for more improvements in the sixth year.
Other projects on Bejot's agenda include a new strategic vision plan, parks master plan, and capital improvement plan. A downtown master plan is also in the works to attract more businesses and investment to the Ayers Street corridor.
Filling staff positions, especially the vacant community and economic development director role, is crucial for these plans. Bejot's extensive experience and education make her well-suited for these challenges. She holds a master’s degree in public administration and undergraduate degrees in criminal justice administration and political science.
Scott Logan, Harvard City Clerk, praises Bejot's intelligence and dedication. He believes her knowledge of city government and her personal qualities will greatly benefit Harvard.
