Health Costs of Fiscal Cuts
Governments in European Union countries made big changes to their spending after the financial crisis. They cut back on public funds to fix their finances. But did these cuts come at a cost to people's health?
The answer is yes. Our research looked at how these changes affected health across 27 European Union countries. We wanted to know if cutting back on spending would make people healthier or sicker.
We found that when governments cut back on spending, more people died, especially young ones. This is a big problem because it means that people are not living as long as they should be. We also saw that babies were more likely to die in their first year of life. This is a sad outcome because it means that families are losing their little ones too soon.
These findings are important because they show that cutting back on spending can have serious consequences for people's health. It's not just about numbers on a spreadsheet; it's about real people's lives.
