Health Data Platforms: How Public Reporting Systems Work and What's Missing

Public reporting systems are digital tools that share health care performance numbers with everyone. Examples include Hospital Compare in America and NHS Choices in Britain. These platforms exist to boost openness, hold providers accountable, and help patients pick their doctors. The research focuses on the technical side that makes these systems possible.

To understand how well these systems function, scholars ran a scoping review. They used seven major scientific databases covering articles from 2000 through 2026. Sources included PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE, ACM, AIS, eLibrary, and Cochrane. Peer-reviewed studies and conference papers on PRS technology were collected.

The analysis uncovered several weak spots in our knowledge about the underlying information systems. Topics such as system architecture, data sharing rules, API design, usability testing, and overall technical performance receive little attention. This gap suggests future work needs to dig deeper into these building blocks before we can trust the public health insights they provide.
