Healthy Habits in Ethiopia: What Drives Food Choices?
Diet-related problems have become a major health issue worldwide, surpassing hunger-related issues. In the Global South, there's a lack of research on how people make food choices. This study aimed to fill that gap by looking at how people in Mekelle City, Ethiopia, make dietary decisions.
In Ethiopia, people's preferences for the future and their willingness to take risks play a big role in their food choices. But how do these factors affect what people eat? To find out, researchers conducted experiments and gathered data from 2024. They used a special approach to account for any health-related factors that might influence the results.
The study found that people who are impatient, impulsive, and risk-averse tend to eat less healthy food. However, the relationship between these traits and healthy eating is complex. Some people who want to eat healthy foods don't actually invest in them because they're worried about the future.
In Mekelle City, people's food choices are influenced by their preferences for the future and their willingness to take risks. This study provides valuable insights into how people make dietary decisions in the Global South.
