Hearing the voice of King Richard III from more than 500 years ago. Thanks to advanced technology, this is now possible. A project led by British vocal coach Yvonne Morley-Chisholm has managed to recreate the voice of the late king, showing the world what he might have sounded like. This isn't the high-class accent you'll hear from modern royals. Instead, it's got a more down-to-earth twinge, something closer to common folk. The project, which involved experts from various fields, took a decade to complete.
How did they do it? They looked at everything from dentistry to how Richard's face and body were shaped. They even got help from a leading linguist who specializes in 15th-century English. The result? A voice unlike any modern accent, mixed with a hint of Yorkshire’s unique dialect. Think of it like learning a new language – all the rules and spelling matter.
You might remember Richard III from Shakespeare’s plays, where he's depicted as a hunchback with a famous line about a horse. But the real king, who ruled for two years before his death in 1485, wasn't that. His body was discovered in a parking lot in 2012! Details from his skeleton proved vital for reconstructing his face and, later, creating his voice.
The team picked British actor Thomas Dennis for his physical resemblance to the king. They worked together to give Dennis Richard’s personality and accent. It’s like trying on a character in a play, but based on real historical data!
Historian Philippa Langley assisted by studying letters and descriptions, helping create the most accurate portrayal of Richard III. This project opens doors for exploring forgotten aspects of history in new ways. Maybe soon, other famous historical figures will get the same treatment.
