Peer support programs can make a big difference in helping Latinx individuals deal with substance use and mental health issues. But how do you make these programs work best for this community? A recent study looked into this question. The study focused on a Spanish-speaking organization that helps people in recovery. They talked to leaders, peer supporters, and supervisors to understand what makes their program successful. They found some key things that help the program work well. First, the program is designed to fit the Latinx culture. It reduces stigma and celebrates recovery and community. This makes it more welcoming and effective. Second, the program addresses bigger issues. Outside the organization, cultural differences between providers and clients can create barriers. The program tries to bridge this gap. Inside the organization, the environment is supportive. Supervisors provide culturally appropriate guidance. This helps peer supporters do their jobs better. However, the work is not easy. Peer supporters often deal with emotional challenges. The study suggests that future research should look at how to scale up this model and support peer supporters better.
