The incoming Trump administration is facing a big challenge with higher education. The root problems, like the value and cost of college, need immediate attention. While the plans aren't clear yet, early signs show the administration might focus on controversial issues like stopping debt cancellation and changing Title IX protections for students. This could be a missed opportunity, as there are important bipartisan ways to improve higher education. One key area is helping students graduate. Right now, many don't finish college or struggle to find good jobs after graduation. The administration should push colleges to improve their programs. There are also proposals to make colleges show that their programs help graduates get jobs. This could give students and families valuable information before they decide to enroll. Another big issue is the cost of college. Both parties are interested in student debt, but they have different ideas. Some graduate students borrow huge amounts and may not be able to repay them. A limit on student loans might help, but it should still let low-income students access higher education. The loan repayment system is also complex and could use some simplifying. The Office of Federal Student Aid has been struggling. It needs more resources and better leadership to help students and borrowers. With both parties in control, now is the time to fix these problems and make a real difference in higher education.
