Governor Kathy Hochul recently proposed an interesting plan in her State of the State address. She wants to place a police officer on every train during overnight hours for six months. Sounds good, right? But hold on, there's more to consider.
First off, what about the other 16 hours of the day? Will the subways be a free-for-all then? And what happens after the six months are up? Will the officers disappear, and so will the safety?
Hochul also mentioned spending millions on LED lighting. But is that really the problem? New Yorkers might think it's a bit of a smokescreen to distract from her other issues, like the $9 congestion "tax. "
Some people are calling this a classic politician move, saying anything to get re-elected. Hochul sees the shift away from liberals after Trump's win. But does that mean her promises are genuine?
One New Yorker from Coney Island pointed out that the same criminals will still be out there, just maybe not on the subways. It's like moving the problem around, not solving it.
Another concern is that elections might not favor Hochul if held now. She's making the city more unaffordable by pleasing her campaign contributors. Maybe it's time to look at other ways to raise revenue, like making fare-beaters pay or making the MTA more efficient.
