In the world of ice hockey, achieving 1, 000 career points is a massive deal. Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks did just that in 1971. During a game against the Minnesota North Stars, Hull scored his 1, 000th point with an assist in the first period. This significant milestone came in a 5-3 victory that showcased Hull's skills and consistency over his career.
But let's rewind a bit. Before Hull's achievement, other sports stars also made history on this date. In 1937, rookie quarterback Sammy Baugh turned the tide with some impressive touchdown passes. He led the Washington Redskins to a 28-21 victory over the Chicago Bears in the NFL championship. That was quite a debut!
Fast forward to 1953, and Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens became the NHL's top scorer. He achieved this with a goal and two assists, ending the game with 611 points, just one more than his injured teammate Elmer Lach.
1965 saw Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears shine in a big way. He scored six touchdowns, racking up a total of 336 yards. This broke records and left the San Francisco 49ers with a 61-20 defeat.
The sporting world also saw other big moments on this date. Arthur Ashe became the first Black tennis player to top the rankings in 1968. In 1977, NBA Commissioner Larry O'Brien fined and suspended Kermit Washington for a punch thrown during a game. Boxing fans witnessed James "Bonecrusher" Smith knock out Tim Witherspoon in the first round to win the WBA heavyweight title in 1986.
College basketball had its moments too. Mookie Blaylock led Oklahoma to a record 33 steals in a game against Centenary in 1987. And in 1990, Connecticut’s stifling defense led to an 85-32 victory over New Hampshire, where the opposing team didn’t score until nearly 12 minutes into the game.
More recent years saw Keenan Reynolds end his Navy career on a high note in 2015, leading the Midshipmen to their 14th straight win over Army. That same year, the Golden State Warriors' NBA-record win streak was stopped at 24 by the Milwaukee Bucks. Tom Brady had a notable game in 2016, throwing for 406 yards and becoming the fourth NFL quarterback with at least 450 career touchdown passes.
And most recently, Dutch racer Max Verstappen claimed the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship in 2021.
