Hoka Reworks the Clifton for Everyday City Wear

Hoka’s Clifton UTL takes the familiar cushioning of the Clifton line and redirects it toward daily life. Priced at $150, the shoe is offered for men and women. It is not positioned as a mileage-focused running model. Instead, Hoka has reshaped it for sidewalks, commutes, errands, and long days spent moving around a city. That choice raises a useful question: can one shoe stay comfortable without claiming to handle every activity?

The biggest redesign is on the outside. A breathable mesh base is covered with raised, molded polyurethane details. Hoka describes this added layer as a protective shell. It gives the UTL a more rugged look than a standard Clifton, but the brand has tried to preserve a light feel. Reflective laces and webbing add visibility and texture, while a Durabrasion rubber outsole is intended to better withstand regular use.

Comfort still plays a central role. Beneath the tougher exterior, the shoe uses a plush CMEVA midsole. That feature is meant to deliver the soft, cushioned step associated with the Clifton family. The design therefore mixes two goals: protection for everyday surfaces and the familiar feel of a running-inspired sneaker. Whether that balance works will depend on what each wearer values most—durability, comfort, or a distinctly athletic look.

Color options differ by version. Women can choose Frost/Aurora Aqua, Alabaster/Dewy Pink, Cosmic Grey/Stellar Grey, or Black/Black. The men’s version comes in Cosmic Grey/Stellar Grey, Black/Black, and Frost/Black.
