B. C. 's Cariboo and Northwest regions are facing a mix of hot weather and smoky skies. This is not typical for early September, but it's happening. The heat is affecting many places, including Kamloops, Ashcroft, and even up to Terrace.
The weather agency says temperatures could hit 35 degrees Celsius during the day and only drop to 18 degrees at night. This kind of heat can be tough on everyone, but it's especially hard on seniors, people with health issues, and those who live alone. The heat can make existing problems worse, so it's important to stay cool and hydrated.
At the same time, wildfires in the west Cariboo are making the air quality bad in places like Quesnel and Prince George. The smoke is expected to stick around for a day or two. This is not good news for people with breathing problems or allergies.
Over on the north coast, Terrace and nearby areas are also dealing with a heatwave. Temperatures there are expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius before cooling down over the weekend. The high pressure system sitting over the province is causing this late-summer heat.
People are being told to check on their neighbors, especially those who might be more vulnerable. Look out for signs of heat-related illness, like heavy sweating, cramps, or fainting. If you need to cool off, find shade, use water, or head to a public building with air conditioning.
