American students are struggling more than ever in school. Test scores are dropping, and it's not just because of the pandemic. Many kids are falling behind in reading and math. In fact, a lot of students can't even understand simple passages or summarize what they read. This is a big problem, and it's been getting worse for years.
One reason for this could be smartphones. More and more kids have them, and they can be a big distraction. But it's not just about phones. Schools might also be part of the problem. Some people think schools aren't pushing kids hard enough. They say schools used to have higher standards, but now they don't expect as much from students. This could be why kids aren't doing as well as they used to.
Another issue is that not all kids are struggling equally. The top students are still doing okay, but the ones who are already behind are falling even further behind. This is making the gap between the best and worst students even bigger. Some states, like Mississippi, have tried to fix this by setting higher standards and giving schools more resources. And it seems to be working. But other states aren't doing the same thing, and their students are still struggling.
Some people think that artificial intelligence could help fix this problem. They say AI could help students learn more and make up for the years they've lost. But others aren't so sure. They think AI might just make things worse, especially for kids who are already struggling. Either way, something needs to change. Kids can't keep falling behind like this.
