How Dutch Neighborhoods Show Why Obesity Spreads
The research examined how obesity and related health issues are spread across Dutch neighborhoods. It found that these problems do not appear evenly; they often show up together with other challenges and lower social standing.
All inhabited neighborhoods in the Netherlands were included in 2016, giving a total of 12,420 areas. Researchers combined data on health outcomes, food environments, walkability, bikeability, driveability, sports facilities, and socioeconomic position for each place.
A clustering algorithm grouped the neighborhoods into five distinct types. The Ecosyndemic cluster contained 1,070 neighborhoods where obesity was about 17%, chronic disease around 36%, and anxiety or depression risk roughly 55%. These areas also had poor food options and low socioeconomic status. The Privileged cluster had 6,425 neighborhoods with lower obesity (12%) and better conditions. The Psychosocial Vulnerability cluster included 991 neighborhoods with high anxiety/depression risk (47%) but low obesity (11%). The Syndemic cluster had 1,836 neighborhoods with moderate obesity (15%). The Towards Privileged cluster contained 2,098 neighborhoods with obesity around 12%.
The pattern shows that neighborhoods with bad environments and low social status tend to have more obesity and related illnesses. The ecosyndemic approach helps identify these risky spots so officials can create targeted, place‑based interventions.
