How Travel Chatbots Win Hearts: The Trust Factor Behind Your Next Trip

ChinaTue Sep 01 2026

When you book a trip online, there is often a chatbot ready to help. These AI helpers do more than just answer questions. A recent study looked at how travel chatbots build real connections with users. The research focused on Chinese tourists who use chatbots to plan and manage their travels.

The study asked 690 travelers to share their experiences. Researchers wanted to know what makes people trust these digital assistants. They tested three main ingredients. First, personalization means the bot remembers your preferences. Second, interactivity lets you have real conversations. Third, ease of use means the tool is simple to navigate.

What did they find? All three factors made users trust the chatbot more. That trust then led to two important outcomes. Users felt more engaged with their travel planning. They also developed stronger emotional bonds with the chatbot itself. Interestingly, engagement actually helped create deeper feelings toward the bot.

The researchers also looked at social presence. This is how much the chatbot feels like a real person talking to you. When bots scored high on this, users became even more engaged. A special analysis called fsQCA showed which combination matters most. Personalization, ease of use, and engagement emerged as the winning recipe for building emotional connections.

So what does this mean for travel companies? If they want customers to really connect with their chatbot tools, they need to focus on these areas. The study shows that relationships with AI are not just about transactions. They are about trust, interaction, and feeling understood.
