India Tests New Way to Fight Stroke Deaths in Karnataka

Strokes are wrecking lives all over the world. They rank among the top reasons people die or end up with serious disabilities. India is no exception. In fact, the country is seeing a steady rise in stroke cases. The numbers vary from one region to another, which makes things even trickier.

Right now, stroke treatment in India is a mess. Most good hospitals are in cities. The private sector runs most of the show. There simply are not enough doctors who specialize in stroke care. Plus, many places lack the basic tools and facilities needed to help patients quickly. When someone has a stroke, every minute counts. But in many parts of India, people cannot get the help they need in time.

A team of researchers is trying to change that. They have designed a new system called CASCADE, which stands for Comprehensive Acute Stroke Care Model. The goal is simple. They want to see if a structured, well-organized approach to stroke care can actually save more lives and help patients recover better. The study is taking place in Karnataka, a state in South India.

The project will run in six different hospitals, ranging from smaller secondary centers to large tertiary care facilities. Researchers plan to track 510 patients who have had a stroke for the first time. Half of them will be monitored before the new system is put in place. The other half will be monitored after. This way, they can compare the results and see if CASCADE actually makes a difference. Patients will be followed for up to one year, with check-ins at 28 days and then again at three, six, and twelve months. The team will measure survival rates, disability levels, and overall quality of life.

Funding comes from the SKAN Research Trust. The preintervention phase is already underway. As of the latest update, researchers have recruited around 100 patients so far. The analysis will begin once all participants have been enrolled.

CASCADE covers every step of the process. It includes how patients are sorted when they arrive, how doctors diagnose the stroke, what tests are ordered, what treatments are given, when patients need to be transferred to another facility, and how they are discharged. The idea is to standardize everything so no matter which hospital a patient visits, they get the same high level of care.

If this model works, it could become a blueprint for the rest of the country. India needs stroke care systems that reach beyond big cities. This research could show the way forward.
