Catherine Connolly is on track to become Ireland's next president. Her opponent, Heather Humphreys, admitted defeat even though the final vote count is still happening. Humphreys wished Connolly luck and said she would support her as the new president. The election took place on Friday, and the official results are expected later today. All 43 voting areas in Ireland are counting the votes by hand. Polls showed that Connolly, who is 68 years old, had strong support from voters compared to Humphreys, who is 64. Connolly is known for speaking out against Israel's actions in Gaza. She has the support of several left-wing parties, including Sinn Fein, the Labour Party, and the Social Democrats. Young voters especially liked her pro-Palestine stance and her focus on social justice. The president of Ireland represents the country internationally, meets with world leaders, and has some constitutional duties. However, the president does not make laws or set policies. If Connolly wins, she will replace Michael D. Higgins, who has been president since 2011. Connolly would be the 10th president of Ireland and the third woman to hold the position.
