Texas lawmakers have been trying to get death row inmate Robert Roberson III to testify in the Capitol. Roberson was sentenced to death in 2003 for allegedly shaking his daughter to death. His lawyers argue that the science used to convict him is unreliable. Lawmakers were hoping he could testify about this, but the attorney general's office has raised concerns.
In 2003, Roberson was found guilty of killing his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki. The case relied on what's known as "shaken baby syndrome, " which has been questioned by doctors and scientists. Roberson has maintained his innocence for over two decades and has had two execution dates.
Two Texas state representatives, Joe Moody and Jeff Leach, managed to delay one of his execution dates. They did this so Roberson could testify in a committee hearing about the law that lets people contest convictions based on new scientific evidence. The hearing was a big deal, with famous figures like Dr. Phil and author John Grisham participating.
The attorney general's office, however, is not making things easy. Recently, they filed a motion to protect Roberson from testifying. This motion could prevent the Texas Department of Criminal Justice from having to comply with the subpoena.
