John Steuri: Tech Legend and Generous Heart
John Steuri passed away at age 87 last Sunday. He was celebrated as a brilliant technology executive who also dedicated himself to giving back to his community. After a devastating tornado destroyed their home in Topeka in 1966, he made a solemn vow to support others facing similar struggles. That commitment guided much of his later life and work as a generous philanthropist.
Born in Kansas in 1939, Steuri earned a business degree from the University of Kansas. He started his career at Southwestern Bell before joining IBM, which was one of America's fastest-growing technology companies at the time. During his 24-year tenure at IBM, he rose to become a top executive. Later, he moved to Systematics in 1988 and spent eight years leading it. Under his guidance, Systematics grew its annual revenue from $160 million to nearly $1 billion. In 1996, he reached the pinnacle of his corporate career as CEO of Alltel's Information Services division. Throughout his career, he believed success meant serving clients well.
